| What
Is A Chamber of Commerce?
Basically, it is the business community at work as
the central agency for community development for business, industry,
the professions, and all civic interests- doing jobs that no individual
can do alone - rendering many services that benefit all citizens.
The Chamber of Commerce, as a wholly voluntary institution
in the United States, is eight years older than the Declaration
of Independence. The New York State Chamber, first in America, was
organized in 1768, and five years later the first local Chamber
was formed in Charleston, South Carolina.
Today, there are more than 4,000 Chamber of Commerce
in the United States. In these 235 years, Chambers of Commerce have
steadily developed to a high point of efficiency and have proved
to be vitally important in business and civic development throughout
the nation.
Your local Chamber of Commerce is...
Business and professional firms united to make
the Wachusett area a better place to work and live
- A voice for the business community on issues critical
to their betterment...
- A clearinghouse for plans affecting our area's
future...
- A goal-setting agency dedicated to helping the
area reach its full potential in growth and prosperity.
The Wachusett Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit business
advocacy, community and economic development association committed
to the support of its members' growth and success and the development
of a positive economic climate.
The Chamber services the area communities of Berlin,
Bolton, Boylston, Clinton, Harvard, Lancaster, Sterling, West Boylston
and nearby towns and is funded by membership investments. Policies
and programs reflecting our members' ideas and concerns are formulated
and implemented by an elected Board of Directors, a small paid staff,
and many business and professional volunteers.
Drawing from the vast pool of knowledge and resources
of its membership, the Chamber can collectively accomplish what
no one business or professional can do alone. Through the combined
efforts of its membership, the Chamber has the insight and knowledge
to identify and address issues of importance to the business community.
