Lancaster

Established in 1653

Lancaster was first settled in 1643 and was incorporated as a town in 1653.

All or parts of several towns were once part of Lancaster, including Bolton, Clinton, Leominster and Sterling, as well as
Harvard, Stow, Hudson, Marlboro, Berlin and Boylston.

Lancaster’s Town Green sits like an emerald in the center of town. It is surrounded by historic buildings.

the First Church of Christ Unitarian.

Charles Bulfinch designed the First Church of Christ, Unitarian, better known as the Bulfinch Church, in 1816. A Paul Revere bell still chimes in the tower; an annual fall fair is held in the historic horse sheds behind the church.

Thayer Memorial Library

Next is the Thayer Memorial Public Library, built over a century ago,  a gift of the Thayer family, as a memorial to the town’s Civil War dead. The building has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion.

The Center School was built in 1903 and served for years as Lancaster’s high school.

Town Hall completes the circle of historic buildings around the Town Green. Town Hall has a handicapped-accessible entrance to the back and houses the town boards. Built as a gift to the town by a member of the Thayer family in 1904, it has undergone renovations.
