An overview - The core facts:
This summer,
dozens of giant multicolored apples will begin appearing in
the towns of the Wachusett area (PDF, 248k).
The Wachusett Chamber of Commerce and
Clinton Hospital Foundation have joined forces to plan AppleArt!,
a delicious public art program
that
will take place in the late summer and fall of 2005. The tasteful
pieces of modern art will be on display in public areas in the
Wachusett region. These apples will be designed by local artists
and sponsored
by local
businesses. In November of 2005, the dozens of apples will be
rounded up for a highly publicized art auction.
Proceeds from
AppleArt! will be used to fund the initiatives of the Clinton Hospital
Foundation, the Wachusett Chamber of
Commerce
and
other local charities.
Why apples?
The Pilgrims planted the first United States
apple trees in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. As a result, Massachusetts,
and specifically
Central Massachusetts,
is well known for its apples, particularly the McIntosh.
The
towns within the Wachusett region have an abundant amount of
orchards. Each fall, thousands of visitors travel to this
area
to pick apples
and participate in our many festivals.
